Chorister Intro: Liz - Soprano

I joined Met Choir in 2016 when it transitioned from male voice to where it is now, as a mixed choir. I’d not sung in a choir since school days and had no idea what my vocal range was, nor would I say that I can read music that well. I learn best at rehearsals and listening to the same arrangements online. I settled into the soprano section and have enjoyed pushing those high notes ever since!

I really enjoy learning new pieces and of course have my favourites in the back catalogue, especially the more classical choral pieces. I love the sense of beauty in the music and being part of a wonderful group of people making an incredible sound. I’ve been inspired by some of the venues we have sung at and felt grateful for the opportunities to sing in cathedrals and community centres alike. It’s performing for those smaller charities that I love most.

I was recently honoured to be awarded Met Police Colours for my contribution and commitment to choir. I’d served on our choir committee from 2016 to 2022 as music representative initially and then as Soprano Rep. Each section has a representative on committee who is responsible for welfare of members and supporting choir ‘business’. It’s a bit like being an Auntie in the choir family - giving the occasional guiding nudge and a shoulder to lean on whenever it’s needed.

After joining as a shy, hesitant singer who avoided sitting on the front row at rehearsals, I’ve challenged myself to sing the occasional solo within pieces. It’s a joy seeing other choir members do the same as they gain confidence and trust, supported by choir to have a go.
